As the EHIC validity is only of 5 years, at the end of this period, you must apply for its renewal at least 6 months before the end of its expiration date. The process can be done on your existing account on the official NHS website, over the phone or by post. However, note that you cannot use these services to replace your card if it has been lost, stolen or damaged (see below).
How can I renew my EHIC?
After the 5 years validity period of your EHIC, if your circumstances have not changed you can apply for its renewal using your existing account on the official NHS website. To complete the process, you will need your personal identification number (PIN), which is specified on your EHIC. It always begins with UK, followed by 6 numbers. You can also renew your card over the phone or by post (see Application).
If your circumstances have changed (see below), you might have to apply for a new card. Do not hesitate to call the EHIC enquiry line on 0300 330 1350 for more information.
Non-EEA nationals cannot renew their EHIC, they must apply for a new card directly by completing once again an EHIC application form, attaching a copy of their visa or UK residence permit (see Application).
European residents under valid circumstances can renew their EHIC by contacting the Overseas Healthcare team (See Who can apply and how?).
When must I apply for a renewal?
It is important to note that the renewal application must be made at least 6 months before its expiration date. For this, it is important to make sure your ehic is still valid before you travel, especially if you plan on staying abroad for a long time. Note also that any time left on the card will not be added to the new card.
What if I need to renew some but not all cards for my family?
In case you need to renew only some but not all of your family members’ cards, you still must enter the details of each family members, including those who still have valid cardsĀ ; this will allow the system to keep track and link correctly the details of all family member.
When doing this, a warning message will be displayed, specifying which cards can and cannot be renewed.
Can I modify my personal details without renewing?
In case you need to modify your personal details, you can do so online thanks to your PIN. If you don’t have your PIN, you won’t be able to modify your data or renew your card online.
Always have your PIN at hand when contacting the EHIC services as it makes it much easier for the EHIC team to find your details on the system.
Can I renew if my details have changed?
If none of your details have changed, you can apply for a renewal online.
If your name has changed, you can still apply for a renewal of your card by using your PIN. If you don’t, you must contact the application line (see below) in order to apply for a renewal.
If your address has changed, you must first inform the EHIC team of your change of address before being able to renew online. Your renewed cards will then be sent at your new address.
What if my EHIC is lost, stolen or damaged?
If your EHIC happens to be lost, stolen or damaged, you must not ask for a renewal but rather for a replacement card by calling the enquiry line.
If you need treatment abroad and just realise your card has been lost or stolen, your can ask for a Provisional Replacement Certificate (PRC) that will give you the same cover as an EHIC until you return home (see Who can apply and How?).
